Description: TALLAHASSEE — One of Andrew Gillum’s most important messages was trampled over the weekend by an unexpected critic: his former chief of staff. Voters in Tallahassee received mailers in recent days indirectly attacking the Democratic gubernatorial nominee‘s record on fighting crime in the city, where he has been mayor since 2014. The two mail pieces were sent by Dustin Daniels, a mayoral candidate who was Gillum’s top aide until March. “Tallahassee had the highest number of murders in history last year and we top the state for the highest crime rate,” read one of the mail pieces. “We must do better.” The rebuke from a longtime top staffer only serves to amplify ongoing criticism from Republicans that Tallahassee has been overrun with crimes committed on Gillum's watch. The mayor's foes point to the FBI‘s Uniform Crime Report, which shows Leon County, in which Tallahassee is the only major city, led the state in violent crimes last year and recorded an increase in homicides, which jumped from 12 to 22. Overall, however, both violent and property crimes fell across the county. Gillum’s campaign declined comment on Daniel’s mail piece. In the past, the campaign had defended the mayor’s record on the issue. “Crime in Tallahassee is at its lowest level since 2013, and our city continues to get safer every day,” Gillum said in a statement to the Tallahassee Democrat when this year’s crime rates were released. “We will maintain a focus on investing in our human services, ensuring good jobs are available in our community, and providing our police with the resources they need to fight and continue this positive momentum.” The mailers from Gillum’s former top staffer, though, spurred almost immediate attacks from Republicans. “If Gillum’s own former chief of staff is acknowledging that he failed to keep the residents of Tallahassee safe then how can the people of Florida expect Gillum to look out or Florida families across the state?” wrote Republican National Committee spokesman Joe Jackson in an email highlighting the mail pieces. Gillum is running in a heated race against Republican Ron DeSantis, who for three terms represented a congressional district south of Jacksonville.

Description: Gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum is ignoring it. The state-wide media will not ask questions about it. But Mayor Gillum’s former chief of staff, Dustin Daniels, is campaigning on it. What is it? It is Tallahassee’s increase in murders while Andrew Gillum was the mayor of Tallahassee. On a campaign mailer, Dustin Daniels, who is running for his boss’s soon to be vacant Tallahassee mayoral seat, is informing voters that “Tallahassee had the highest number of murders in history last year.” See mailer below. “Last year” would be 2017 when Daniels was the chief of staff for Mayor Andrew Gillum. Reviewing FDLE data going back to 1995 shows that there were 17 murders in Tallahassee in 2017, the highest during that 22 year period. Also, the second highest murder total (16) during this period occurred in 2015. Gillum was elected mayor in 2014. Tallahassee Reports has published detailed research on the increase in the Tallahassee murder rate which began to trend upward in 2009 after Gillum and the Tallahassee city commission ignored pleas for help from law enforcement officials. In 2017 the murder rate in the City of Tallahassee was higher than rates in Miami and Orlando. Daniels also points out in the mailer that “we top the state for the highest crime rate.” Daniels is referencing the fact that Tallahassee/Leon County has led the state of Florida with the highest crime rate in 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017.

Daniels says “WE MUST DO BETTER.”
The message put forth by Daniels is at odds with the message of gubernatorial candidate Andrew Gillum, who is telling voters Tallahassee is already doing better due to the decline in crime for the first six months of 2018. In the process, Gillum is ignoring the decisions that contributed to the record setting crimes rates in Tallahassee which include historical highs in murders.
